Breast augmentation remains the world’s most requested cosmetic surgery. The right choice isn’t simply “go bigger” — it’s selecting the implant, profile and pocket that best fit your anatomy and lifestyle.

Quick essentials

  • Anatomical (teardrop) vs. round: each has specific indications. Neither is universally better.
  • Implant profile (moderate, high, extra-high) defines forward projection and is chosen based on your chest width.
  • Pocket placement (subglandular, submuscular, dual plane) impacts result, palpability and contracture risk.
  • Pricing in Medellín: USD 3,000 – 4,800, implants included.

Anatomical vs. round implants

Anatomical (teardrop)

Mimic the natural breast: more volume in the lower pole, less in the upper. Best for patients with little chest fat, small native breasts, thin chest wall and a conservative result. Rotation is rare with new-generation textured shells.

Round implants

Distribute volume evenly. Best for patients seeking pronounced upper-pole projection — the “lifted décolletage” look. Also preferred in revision surgery and mastopexy with augmentation.

Implant profiles

  • Moderate profile: wide base, modest projection. For wide chests.
  • High profile: balance between base and projection. The most requested option in Medellín.
  • Extra-high profile: narrow base, maximum projection. For narrow chests seeking pronounced volume.

Pocket placement

Subglandular (over the muscle)

Faster, less painful recovery. Risk: implant feels and looks more in patients with little breast tissue. Higher risk of visible borders.

Submuscular (under pectoralis)

Muscle covers the implant — improves naturalness in thin patients. Recovery is more painful in the first 7 days. Preferred when there’s little glandular tissue.

Dual plane

Hybrid technique: upper pole submuscular, lower pole subglandular. The most chosen approach in Medellín — combines advantages of both planes.

2026 pricing in Medellín

Range: USD 3,000 – 4,800 all-inclusive (implants, OR, anesthesia, outpatient stay, follow-ups). Brands we use: Mentor (USA), Motiva (Costa Rica), Polytech (Germany), Sebbin (France). All come with lifetime warranty against rupture.

Realistic recovery timeline

  • Days 1–3: moderate pain, oral analgesics, postsurgical bra 24/7.
  • Day 7: first follow-up, drain removal if used.
  • Week 2: back to office work.
  • Month 1: light cardio resumed.
  • Months 2–3: weight training and high-impact sports resumed.
  • Month 6: stable result, implants fully “settled” into final position.

Real risks to know

  • Capsular contracture: 1–3% with submuscular textured implants. Treatable.
  • Residual asymmetry: no body is 100% symmetric. We minimize, not eliminate.
  • Nipple sensitivity loss: 5–10% transient, < 1% permanent.
  • BIA-ALCL: rare lymphoma associated with macrotextured implants (we haven’t used that texture since 2019).

For international patients

Recommended stay in Medellín: 7–10 days for breast augmentation. We coordinate airport pickup, partner-hotel rates in El Poblado and remote follow-up by video for six months at no extra cost.
